Creating NPCs and Dark Monarch

We will discuss with our backers in more detail when we are in the development of the villains chapter. Yet, there are a few things we want to highlight for those who wonder how it is going to be:

SENSITIVITY Firstly, some of you may wonder how far you can go in evilness. Corpus Malicious is an evil book created for a mature audience, so, characters may be far away from grace. There are of course some common concerns we cannot permit:

  • Hurting children, as it is the case for the whole game industry, is prohibited both legally and ethically. On the other hand, if they are included very indirectly (such as if murdering a village is mentioned, which would probably include children) it can be permitted. Still, we will discuss such things case by case in detail with our backers.

  • Gore for the gore’s sake is not forbidden. Yet, we prefer our villains to have an important meaning behind an action that is outright disgusting. We believe that such extremism can serve a purpose if it fits the theme and the story; if it provides a point. On the other hand, having it just because a villain can makes the villain become shallow in its character depth, in our opinion.

In short, we have somethings we permit and somethings that we would be concerned of. Yet, please write your characters freely. Even for very dark villains, we will at them together case by case and find the best fit for both you and us with close communication and understanding.

LORE Every NPC will have a description, background, goals, and roleplaying parts. All of these will take about 350-400 words, but this may increase as we communicate about it together and see how much it covers on a page. We want the lore to be meaningful and can sacrifice from page space for the sake of more depth in a character.

Description: What a creature would see when it looks at the character in a first glimpse. Background: History of the character. Goals: Agendas and secret agendas of the character. What does it want to do, what does it want to fulfill? Roleplaying: Tips for the Dungeon Master for roleplaying the character in a game.

STAT BLOCKS You will have all the content in Corpus Malicious and Mindabar available to you. You will be able to use the archetypes, backgrounds, feats, spells, items, and everything else for your villain. Additionally, you will be able to use the default Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition material as long as it is permitted under their Open Game License agreement. You can download the System Reference Document (SRD) to check what is available and what isn’t. You can create your villain with a single class or can have up to three classes by multiclassing. We would like you not to have more than a single spellcaster class though, as multiple spellcasting classes tend to make the spellcasting section of the stat block very complicated and long.

If you are used to monster-creating in D&D 5E, we can communicate for cool features you would like to add to your villain.

DARK MONARCH Dark Monarchs can have a cult, small kingdom, or other additional things in their content. We will work together in detail with our Dark Monarch backers for what would they like to include in their content. Dark Monarch backers will have six pages from Corpus Malicious that they will be able to use any way they like.

ARTWORK We will have artwork available for our NPC backers in the pledge manager. You will be able to make our artist draw a standard quality or high-quality artwork for your villain by providing the amounts for their service. Our artists are talented enough and can even put in your own face to the artwork of the villain you are creating.

Dark Monarch backers have the high-quality artwork included in their pledge level.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
